Dear Parents: Welcome to the 2016 – 2017 school year at Brockton Elementary School. I and the entire staff at Brockton want to make this a wonderful learning and growing year for your child. I am sure you will be amazed at the tremendous amount of academic and social growth you will see in your child this year.
You can help your child have a successful school year by making sure your child goes to sleep between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. each school night. Make sure that your child is well – rested; avoid sugary and fatty foods for snacks and lunches. While sugar provides a sudden burst of energy, it generally is not permitted in this classroom. Instead, provide your child with fresh fruit, vegetables or crackers for snacks at school.
Homework will be given Monday through Friday, with very few exceptions. On Monday, I will provide an assignment sheet for homework assigned during the week. If your child does not have homework on those nights – ask him or her why or you can with the classroom website. I remind the children each morning to turn in their homework; but the final responsibility is theirs. The homework is not meant to be hard or frustrating. It is meant to give the children a study time at home and parents a chance to interact with their child and to encourage the educational process. It is a time of approximately 50 – 60 minutes where parent and child can work together whether it be in the evening or in the morning before school. I hope that this will be a positive time that you will spend with your child. Once a week, I encourage you to take your child to the public library and have him or her select a chapter book to read. Each student will have a book report to complete at the end of each month.
Please, if your child is absent, send a note or you can go to the office and fill out an absent slip. Our state-funding depends on your cooperation in this matter. Excused absences are for illness, medical/dental or bereavement reasons only. I am looking forward to meeting you at our Back to School Night, where I can discuss my program in more detail. Back to School Night will be held on September 20, 2016. Should you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to call the office (310) 479 – 6090 and leave a message for me. Thank you for your time and I look forward working with you and your child.
Sincerely, Ernesto Cavarlez Fifth Grade Teacher

Homework is used to help reinforce ideas and concepts that each student is learning. Please check and intial all homework that your child brings home. Your child will be receiving homework for Language Arts and Mathematics at the beginning of each week. Homework will be given five days a week and should not take more than fifty minutes to complete. If homework is not turned in or completed for many days a warning letter will be sent home to notify the parent. Homework is an opportunity for you and your child to spend some quality time together.
